Providing
for your cat by holographic will ...
Most
wills are not that costly and codicils are quite cheap. If
you are truly broke and can't afford a will, at least let
your wishes be known among your friends and family and write
something down that states your wishes for your cat's care
after your death.
In
a minority of states, unwitnessed, handwritten wills (called
holographic wills) are legally valid. But handwritten wills
are fraught with possible legal problems. Most obviously,
after your death, it may be difficult to prove that your unwitnessed,
handwritten document was actually written by you and intended
to be your will.
A
properly signed, witnessed will is much less vulnerable to
challenge by anyone claiming it was forged or fabricated.
If need be, witnesses can later testify in court that the
person whose name is on the will is the same person who signed
it, and that making the will was a voluntary and knowing act.
This
holographic will should contain:
Who
should do the caretaking and their location
How much you are setting aside for the cat's care
Where the "How to care
for my cat kit" is located
Example of a holographic will ...
This
is a sample of a holographic
will that can be adjusted for your own circumstances.
Remember that a holographic will must be in your own handwriting
(not typed or printed out by computer). Also make sure that
your writing is legible.
